About the pose: Photographed here, is a variation of Hanumanasana.
It is a variation as I am turned towards the camera as opposed to facing forward. Hanuman is known for utilizing one-pointed devotion to accomplish great tasks. In his mythology, he is able to leap over the ocean - hence the split-like shape of the pose.
What I love about this pose is that, for me, there is an essential element of surrender required. I can not force this pose. For me it requires gradual, constant  presence.
I need to take time to breathe into the ‘obstacles’ that show up during the time of practice. They can appear as tight hamstrings, or even a tight approach or overly strong aim. The breath becomes my Hanuman, my remover of obstacles here, and only when I surrender to it will the pose come.

Hanumanasana and you: These are suggestions - listen to the wisdom of your own body first and foremost. Warm up with sun salutations and any poses that open the  backs of your legs. Experiment in hamstring stretch - with one knee down and the other leg forward, heel down, foot flexed, knee straight. Then progress using blocks beneath the hands to give you extra height. You can lower the block height as your body opens. Remember to contract the opposing muscles - in this case the quads, and aim to keep hips level. Play with this pose on your own, and let me know what clarity you come to through your own practice. Namaste, Monica
